MUSIC - GUSTAV MAHLER – Musical mastermind, mystical myth or misguided misfit? - (No Longer Available)
2010 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Mahler and 2011 will be the centennial of his death. As we push deeper into the new century, the music of Mahler has grown in popularity and impact. Like many of us today, Mahler’s life and career straddled two centuries. Behind him lay a golden age, the comfort of the rich Austro-German musical traditions of Bach to Bruckner, while the future in the 20th century seemed frightening, turbulent and ominous, struggling for stability. Through his music, Mahler wrestled to understand the human soul and the meaning of life and death, and life after death. As a result, his music can be passionate and soothing, explosive and raw, sardonic and sublime. It’s a complex language, as it expresses the personal and the philosophical, often suggesting another state of mind and being. But it’s a language that tells us about ourselves, our purpose, our possible future and our spirituality – things that we may not always want to be told.
“A SYMPHONY MUST BE LIKE THE WORLD. IT MUST EMBRACE EVERYTHING.”
– Mahler to Jean Sibelius, 1907
