Cultural Travel
FROM CLASSICAL PURSUITS

"What sets worlds in motion is the interplay of differences,
their attractions and repulsions."
~Octavio Paz
Cultural Travel is usually used to describe tours focussing on museums,
concert halls and opera houses. But Cultural Travel also refers to planned
encounters with people from various walks of life and exposure to the
institutions and traditions that govern a particular society. Too often,
we travel to places in the protective bubble of a private coach and
accompanying guides, isolating ourselves from local people, their history
and their values.
As technology shrinks our world and brings us all closer together,
the opportunity to learn about our neighbours (both present and past)
grows. By delving into other cultures, we learn about the history of
other people, the rise of their civilization and in some cases, their
downfall. By viewing both the highs and lows, we come away with a much
better view of not just them, but also ourselves. Classical Pursuits
trips all include experiences that expose us to local people and customs.
In Siena, we attend a secular "baptism" at one of the local
contradas and are invited to a wine festival and private tour at another.
In Milledgeville, Georgia, we spend time with two of Flannery O'Connor's
close personal friends.
Cultural travel is an excellent way to undertake serious self-exploration.
By understanding and appreciating different cultures, our senses and
awareness becomes more acute and we broaden our perspective about the
quality of our own life.
Cultural travel leaves us with much more than a typical vacation. We
gain a deeper knowledge of the world. We get to experience life outside
our familiar comfort zone. It can be a life-changing experience.
