The death this summer of the grande dame of Irish literature, Edna O’Brien, has inspired renewed interest in and appreciation for her writing. She left behind a remarkable body of work, including short stories, novels, essays, biographies and her autobiography. Always daring in taking on controversial social issues, unflinching in her description of the private struggles of unforgettable characters, she was unparalleled in her devotion to craft. In this seminar we will pay homage to Edna O’Brien as we read together her groundbreaking novel, The Country Girls, explore some of her best short stories and consider excerpts from her autobiography and essays.
