“I don’t mind a reasonable amount of trouble.” — Sam Spade

Dashiell Hammett was a man who wrote his stories and novels like movies even before the movies embraced the hard-boiled genre he pioneered. His terse, cinematic style revealed a poetic underworld of toughs, dames, and plutocrats in a heady mix that ripped open the dark underbelly of American capitalism and human nature. Redefining the American hero with his nameless Continental Op and later the legendary Sam Spade, the public thrilled first to his gritty, realistic crime stories in the pulps, loved his books, then flocked to the many film versions of the novels — Maltese Falcon, Red Harvest and Thin Man especially.

In this six-week, read-as-we-go seminar we’ll discuss all five of Hammett’s novels, plus selected short fiction, in an investigation behind the shadowy surfaces to uncover why readers remain fascinated by these iconic characters and craftily paced narratives. Consider the evolution of his wisecracking detectives, wily femmes fatales, nefarious bad guys, and the nihilistic streets of early 20th-century urban America. Join us for this deeper look at the dark fictional world of Dashiell Hammett — widely considered one of the finest mystery writers of all time.
