“Maman died today.” The first line of Camus’s The Stranger and the novel’s famous antihero Meursault need little introduction. We’ll do a close reading, plumbing the depths that lie below the simple language and straightforward plot.

“Mama’s still alive today.” The narrative and language of Kamel Daoud’s The Meursault Investigation offer a rich counterpoint to Camus’s text. Told from the point of view of Harun, brother of “the Arab,” the unnamed man killed by Meursault, the novel explores the interior life of a man living in the shadow of the murder and the violence of the Algerian War. It’s as powerful as the novel that inspired it.
