They may love them or hate them, but few people are indifferent to the colour fields of Mark Rothko. His enormous canvases covered in blocks of yellow and orange and white and red demand our attention. But what are we looking at, and why should we bother? What kind of seeing does his work demand of us, his viewers? How does a painting become an experience? In this seminar we will take up these questions through a consideration of Rothko’s paintings and his words.

When: Four weekly sessions on Mondays at 7 p.m. Eastern, starting April 3, 2023

Duration: 2 hours per session

Dr. Wendy O’Brien is a philosopher with over 35 years’ experience teaching in academic and non-academic environments, including at Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, Wilfrid Laurier University, Harvard, Oxford and the Art Gallery of Ontario. She’s conducted many seminars and webinars for Classical Pursuits and Worldwide Quest on a wide range of subject matter that lie at the intersection of philosophy, literature and the visual arts. Explorations of the paintings of Cézanne, Matisse, Monet, Turner and Whistler, as well as the writings of Proust, have brought her to the consideration of the works of Rothko and the development of a new way of seeing.
