TODAY IN LITERATURE – CBC Radio interview with Seamus Heaney

Seamus Heaney has such a strong following that he’s been nicknamed Famous Seamus, and his lectures are so popular that the crowds lining up to hear him are dubbed “Heaneyboppers”. He’s Ireland’s first Nobel Prize winning poet since Yeats.

Heany is one of my very favourite poets. I was looking forward to Rosemary Gould’s seminar, Seamus Heaney: History and Its Inheritors this July at Toronto Pursuits. Familiy matters have obliged Rosemary to postpone this session until 2012.

I hoped to catch a sighting of Seamus Heaney recently here in Toronto. He was in town as a nominee for the pretigious Griffin Poetry Prize in the international category. Tickets were sold out weeks in advance. I was desperate to hear him read but consoled myself with this terrific interview with Eleanor Wachtel, host of CBC Radio’s Writers & Company.

Enjoy an Interview with Seamus Heaney, rebroadcast on May 29, 2011.
