Mexico City: Sacred, Profane, Priceless

Mexico Tour Overview

We are excited to introduce this new tour that begins in Mexico City’s Zócalo, where the excavated Aztec Templo Mayor, the “Ultrabaroque” colonial cathedral, and the multilayered National Palace reveal competing ways of claiming and interpreting the same ground.

We follow this idea into the world-class National Museum of Anthropology, Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul, and Diego Rivera’s Anahuacalli collection of pre-Columbian art. We then travel to Puebla to meet Talavera pottery artisans and visit the Biblioteca Palafoxiana, where ideas about craft, faith, and scholarship have shaped what Mexico preserves and values.

Valeria Luiselli’s The Story of My Teeth provides a mischievous companion to our journey. Its flamboyant auctioneer-protagonist transforms ordinary objects by inventing irresistible stories about them. We’ll discuss the novel, then watch similar forces at work in a market, artists’ homes, museum collections, a Talavera workshop and—if the 2028 calendar permits—a live auction at Morton Subastas. Other readings by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and Octavio Paz deepen our inquiry into authority, identity, and the unstable boundary between the sacred and the profane.

Along the way, you’ll ask who creates value, whose story becomes authoritative, and what happens when someone tells it differently—all while enjoying the beauty and energy of Mexico City and Puebla with a lively group of fellow travellers.

Accommodation

Accommodations will be announced shortly. In Mexico City, we will be staying near the Zócalo.

Readings

Valeria Luiselli, The Story of My Teeth
Selected short works by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and Octavio Paz

We chose these readings for the different kinds of attention they ask of us. Valeria Luiselli’s contemporary novel The Story of My Teeth rewards a willingness to follow an unreliable storyteller, enjoy the absurd, and question our own desire to believe a good story. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, a 17th-century nun writing in New Spain, brings wit and precision to the defence of intellectual curiosity, asking us to consider the relationship between learning and freedom. Mexico’s great modern poet and essayist Octavio Paz invites examination of identity and the tensions within cultural inheritance.

Read together, these books offer a glimpse into the richness and imaginative power of Mexican literature, and guide our explanation of the questions that shape this tour: What do we owe the stories and traditions that shape us? And how can reading another person’s words unsettle what we think we know?

The tour price will be announced shortly. The price per person based on two people sharing a room.

Canadian and US passport holders and permanent residents do not need visas for tourist stays of 180 days or fewer. You can find further information here.

This program is best suited to travellers who are comfortable walking and standing for extended periods. Our explorations of neighbourhoods and markets may involve uneven paving, crowded streets, and busy public spaces, while museum visits require periods of standing and walking through galleries. We will build in opportunities to sit and take comfort breaks whenever possible. Where practical, guests may choose to take a taxi at their own expense.

Mexico City sits approximately 2,240 metres above sea level, and some travellers may initially experience mild breathlessness or fatigue. We recommend staying well hydrated, limiting alcohol, and allowing time to adjust as we explore at a comfortable pace.

If you have concerns about being able to participate in this trip, please contact travel@worldwidequest.com for further information and advice.

The tour price does not include flights. Our tour partner Worldwide Quest can help with flight bookings. If you would like this help, please let us know or email travel@worldwidequest.com.

No, you don’t need to speak Spanish. Our Mexico Tour Manager is bilingual.

That being said, we always recommend mastering basic courtesies.

Travelling with knowledgeable local guides and a small group offers a reassuring way to experience Mexico’s extraordinary art and culture. Our itinerary focuses on Mexico City, Cholula, and Puebla, which are outside the regions where the U.S. and Canadian governments currently advise against travel due largely to cartel violence.

You’ll have private ground transportation, designated airport transfers, English-speaking guides, and the support of our Mexico Tour Director throughout the tour. These arrangements help you explore with confidence, while sensible precautions—such as keeping valuables discreet and staying attentive in busy places—remain important.

Our intercity travel will be on national highways by private coach. We will serve only bottled or filtered water and eat at reputable restaurants.

We’re happy to discuss any specific concerns with you.

We can accommodate most allergies and restrictions. We regularly work with travelers who have shellfish, dairy, or nut allergies, gluten allergies or sensitivity, and vegetarian diets. You can help us out by providing complete and accurate information about allergies and restrictions.

Like other tour operators, our travel partner Worldwide Quest plans tours 18 to 24 months in advance, with payments to vendors and suppliers due well ahead of the tour. Suppliers in the countries Worldwide Quest works with expect payment in US dollars. When these suppliers must convert to CAD so many months in advance, they have to speculate the value of the Canadian dollar at the time of booking.

Over the past several years, the final pricing has worked in the favour of our travellers, paying a better rate than would have been if originally priced in Canadian dollars.

Our About Our Tours page has more FAQs that cover topics related to all our tours. We also welcome your questions at info@classicalpursuits.com.
